"Jizo" comes from the Buddhist god protector of travelers, children, women and the weak. It is usually portrayed as a small monk-like figure. Jizo takes care of the souls of unborn children, their statues often being adorned with warm clothes and decorations. It is often depicted on the sides of the road, to bring passerby's good luck.
